Mechanism of Action of Oxytocin:
Oxytocin stimulates the smooth muscle of the uterus to contract by increasing the concentration of calcium within the muscle cells controlling contraction of the uterus. This helps to induce labor or to control postpartum bleeding by contracting the uterus.
Side Effects of Oxytocin:
Painful contractions, and decreased uterine blood flow happen with Oxytocin which can increase the risk of asphyxia or hypoxia to the fetus.
Hyponatremia or Hypochloremia can happen in the mothers because the oxytocin hormone is very similar to antidiuretic hormone and has some of the same effects. This can also cause coma or seizures due to the electrolyte imbalances.
