Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in a nursing principle that you absolutely need to know about in nursing school.
By following Maslow’s hierarchy, you’ll be able to answer nursing priority questions much easier!
In this video, I’ll walk through Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and talk about how to apply it in nursing school.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a prioritized list of needs a person has. So when you are answering nursing school exam questions, or you’re at clinical, make sure you keep Maslow’s Hierarchy in mind as you care for your patients.
Here is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in order of priority:
1. Physiological
2. Safety
3. Love and belonging
4. Self-esteem
5. Self-actualization
This order is important, because you’ll want to solve the patient’s physiological needs and safety needs FIRST, before you help them with the others.
The first tier of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (the physiological needs) are strongly tied to another nursing principle, called the ABCs.
The ABCs stands for airway, breathing, and circulation. So you’ll want to make sure your patient’s airway is clear, that they are breathing, and that their blood is circulating before you move onto anything else.
So when you’re answering nursing exam questions (especially nursing priority questions), keep Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in mind.
