You guys, I know we’ve talked about this before, but it’s worth repeating because I get so.many.emails about it from students: how to make studying pharmacology easier?!?

So this video is going to be short and sweet, because I have my #1 tip for you that’s going to save you a ton of time on studying pharmacology so you can actually catch a breath, spend some time with your family, or catch up on sleep. 

So, my number one tip for studying pharmacology is *drum roll please* focus on the mechanism of ACTION for the drug CLASS! 

Woah. Let me say that again: 

Learn the mechanism of action for the DRUG CLASS, NOT the mechanism of action for the individual medications. 
The mechanism of action is what the drug does in the body. It’s literally the ACTION of the medication, but here’s what’s really cool about this: 

A drug CLASS is a group of medications that have similar or the SAME mechanism of action. So all of the medications within a drug class will act similarly in the body. 

And here’s the COOLEST part to this: 

Because all the drugs in the drug class act similar in the body (so they have the same mechanism of action), that means they have similar side effects, and your nursing assessment and nursing care will be similar for all of those medicaitons. 
MIND BLOWN. 

This is exactly what I teach inside our “How To Study Pharmacology” course inside the NursingSOS Membership Community. And it’s a BIG deal.

And here’s why: 

This means that you need to STOP memorize the mechanism of action for individual drugs. It’s a waste of time. 

Focus on learning the mechanism of action for the drug CLASS, and you’ll automatically know the mechanism of action for each individual drug inside that drug class. 

It’s like studying for a 10th of the time you are now. 

So focus on learning the mechanism of action for the drug class, instead of each individual medication. 
And the best way to do this is by using your Davis Drug Guide and looking in the front where all the drug classes are, and looking under “General Action and Information.” This will give you a quick breakdown of how the medications in that drug class act in the body.
